*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!

Chapter 5 (Day 22)

Afterwards the construction crew began loading up their equipment. They gave the hippies silent dirty looks and roared out of Hip-In Meadow, leaving a heavy cloud of dust in their wake. The hippies untangled themselves from the trees and headed back to the gravel pit. Some followed the familiar trail down to the beach. Already the food court was cooking up breakfast for the returning protesters. On stage a Reggae band was tuning up and the Hip-In started to come alive again. Lines formed at the food court, the cool Caribbean rhythms kicked in, the sunlight chased the shadows away, the commune members each worked a little section of the Hip-In, and Geezer felt like everything was under control again.

Near the stage Tedro did a high stepping dance with lots of kicks and twirls and energetic Zorba the Greek like movements. Geezer watched how happy he was dancing his clumsy jig and laughed. Many people crossed the…
