*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!
Chapter 4 (page 20)
On his way down to the lobby the jerky elevator that smelled like bleach and piss dinged in two cops on the fourth and second floor. Both of them were solidly built with crew cuts and a jockish air about them. The elevator stopped in the lobby and Yuma exited, wondering exactly what he was doing here and what he would say to these people. The lobby looked like a thousand Monet’s had exploded and drenched everything in bright cheery colors. Sunlight streamed in through the huge front windows making Yuma feel like he was caught in a spot light.
More cops came into the lobby and began grouping into macho little clicks. Yuma stood near some type of fake tree trying to camouflage himself. Seeing a small break in the crowd Yuma went into the banquet room to escape the groups of police officers and to get a feel for where he would be making his speech.
