*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!

Chapter 4 (page 19)

The morning traffic in San Francisco woke Yuma with a burst of horns and shouts coming through his window. Yuma made a few pitiful rolls away from the noise, but found himself surround by the sounds coming off the street and making their way into his hotel room. Then, as if he hadn’t already been jarred from sleep, the sun shone in through his window making his forced awakening complete. The city was awake and there was no escaping it. The tendrils of busy people would snake out across the day to build and burn their way through the weekend. He could feel it trying to ensnare him again even though he’d been in the express lane before and knew how much he hated that road Yuma still felt an urge, small as it was, to get out their again and be bustled along with the responsible and economically motivated current that ran through the city. The urge scared him, seeing how easily his life in Trajico Bay could…
