*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!

Chapter 3 (page 13)

“Come on Geezer, quit whining. It’s been how many years and you’ve never lost one yet.”

“It’s a fluke, a long string of good luck.”

“Tell old Jeri the main problem and I’ll come up with a fix.”

“We have no main tent. It will not go up this year no matter what we try. The poles just slide out and the whole thing crashes down on us.”

“You’re trying to stabilize it with the posts, but the main pole in the center is pulling against the others because the grounds unstable. You need to make a sort of giant lean-to instead,” Bill Guss said.

Geezer was ready to ignore him and stay in his misery, but something in Bill’s tone of voice conveyed a sense of knowledge and logic. Bill’s posture and facial expressions had remained the same as they always did throughout the day, which made…
