*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!

Chapter 3 (page 11)

Geezer waved as Yuma walked to his car. He started up the old Interceptor letting it rattle its way to a fast idle before pulling out of the parking lot of Jeri’s Tavern and heading up Tack Road towards his house.

By the afternoon the main tent was the last thing to be erected. The main stage had been removed from Hip-In Meadow and re-assembled in the gravel lot. Now they needed a the tent to provide shade. Geezer, Tedro, Fredrick, Maggie, had tried four times to raise the 50X50 tent, but the posts wouldn’t hold in the pea gravel. Each time they tried to push the center pole up one of the outer posts would slip and the whole thing crashed to the ground. Normally, they would just spike the posts in the thick dirt provided by Hip-In Meadow and brace the rear against the trees so the guests had a convenient way to escape from the sun, but the gravel lot behind Jeri’s Tavern was nothing but open…
