*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!
Chapter 1 (page 5)
A few months before a legal notice had appeared in the county newspaper about Hip-In-Meadow’s impending use, but somehow in their rush to prepare for the Hip In Festival it had been forgotten. Now as he watched the activity going on across the road the legal notice came back to Geezer.
Two large, beautiful oak trees sat on the southern end of the meadow and a tangle of once domesticated plants intertwined with native flora had gone fairly wild, but still suggested a hedge defining an ancient property line that all grew up to an overgrown foundation of what had been at one time a very large and probably stately Victorian home. Deeper in the woods overlooking the bay, there was another smaller foundation and the decrepit remains of a picket fence. But even with this evidence suggesting that people had once lived here, the commune members had never seen anyone return to…
