*This was the very first novel I wrote. I started it in 1999 and finished the first draft in 2003. After several years of failed attempts to shop it around to literary agents and publisher I finally gave up. I still think it is a good first novel, so I’ve decided to share it here on Medium. Enjoy!

Chapter 1 (page 4)

It was during that afternoon from Mt. Vasquez’s tunnel that Geezer heard the construction crews rumbling through on their way to begin the destruction of the meadow. As he sat outside Jeri’s Tavern enjoying the sun and trying to organize things into a tiny notebook for the Hip-In Festival in his cloudy stoned way that he heard angry militant sounds coming from the tunnel as if an army had descended on Trajico Bay intent on conquering and pillaging.

Geezer stood up from his chair to see what was causing all the racket and saw a multitude of headlights emerging from the tunnel. Too Geezer’s surprise a convoy of seven one-ton Ford pickups loaded with men and equipment came from the tunnel and headed slowly up Tack Road. The lead truck, an all black one-ton Ford diesel truck crawled slowly up the road until it reached the meadow. Geezer watched two men jump out, one short and fierce wearing a burgundy…
