Jokes aside, what he does here is very different than asking the reader to simply observe a scene. This is what much of American screenwriting does, as it’s often a kind of technical screenwriting — which I have sometimes heard producers refer to as a “blueprint” for a TV pilot or, more typically, a feature screenplay — and it demands nothing of the reader except to catalogue the most important details and decide if they accumulate into something interesting by the end.

That is very interesting and also very helpful. I come from a literary fiction background, short stories and novels.
So, when I started co-writing scripts with a friend I tried to stick with what I believed was allowed in scripts and left out any literary flourish. I might have to re-think my approach.
