The ones that just keep on giving

Those of you that have been writing on Medium for a while probably noticed that your perennial stories are some of your biggest earners now since the new payment system took effect on Oct 28th.

My daily average has tripled. Before you get all excited though, that just means I might be able to justify three plain coffees a day at Starbucks instead of just one. And since we are only a few days into this thing who knows if it will continue or not. The thing is though, my two top earners, and I mean over 100 and 200 times higher than my lowest earners ($2.56 vs $0.01 if you need to know), are both more than a year old.

What this means exactly, I don’t really know. I’m guessing it has to do with Tedium’s algorithms, SEO, and very high (for me) views, reads, and claps these stories have gotten since they were published.

I did find a couple things interesting.

  1. Stories about Medium/Tedium old and new are still doing the best.
  2. Curation doesn’t seem to mean shit. Out of the 35 stories that were earners only 2 of them had been curated. And neither of them were in the top 5.
  3. 2–4 minute stories still seem to do okay. Not surprising maybe since the my average read time seems to be…
