I remember watching a great documentary many years ago about the Orion Engine. Freeman Dyson seemed to think that it would have worked and possibly allowed us to reach Alpha Centari in about 80 years. Nixon scrapped it though in 1972.

I often wonder why we don't try and build an Orion Engine on a smaller scale in orbit and at least use it to explore more of our soalr system.
