I like Brian Cox’s take on alien civilizations. He basically said even if only 1 or 2 advanced civilizations arise per galaxy that would still mean there are potentially 1–2 trillion (or have been) advanced civilizations in the universe.

Maybe we’ll never make contact with any of them because of the vast distances, but I still think their existence is possible if not probable.
