How I’ve added 16k followers in three years and have almost nothing to show for it.

There are lots of great articles on Medium almost everyday about how social media wizards have added followers, built email lists, sold tons of books, and saved humankind from certain destruction. This ain’t one of ’em. Instead, this is about how over the past three years or so I’ve managed to bumble, stumble, and blind luck my way into around 16,000 followers across five or so social media networks.

Twitter

It all started with Twitter (@stevenbhowwrites). I didn’t really know what it was. When I first set up an account and started playing around there it sort of felt like I was reading people’s super dynamic grocery lists most of the time. 7 months of bumbling and I suddenly had 3k followers. How did I do it? I’m still not exactly sure, but I know it involved a lot of following. So much so that Twitter told me I’d maxed out my following capacity and wasn’t allowed to do it anymore. I was bummed, but then a few months later Twitter purged a bunch of bot accounts and suddenly I was in the money again. I still skirt the danger zone though. I think I’m currently following around 4k people (at least I hope they’re all people). I make it habit though to go through and clean out all the “Pug Planet” and “Happy Happy Kitty Cha Cha”(s) every so often…
