My Top Ten on Medium (so far)
These are the ten best poems, short stories, and personal essays I’ve written and published on Medium and elsewhere (so far). Eleven are from 2020 and the rest are old favorites. Enjoy.
The old man had been working in his small vegetable garden when the young foreign reporter approached from the dirt road that led out of the village and into the foothills.
The old man leaned on his shovel and listened to the reporter explain that he had been separated from a group of soldiers he was following into the hills near where the fighting was happening.
They were able to communicate using simple words in broken sentences in each other’s languages. The old man gestured towards his cottage and told the young reporter it would be safer to spend the…
Short form is anything on Medium that is 150 words or less.
1.Bold the first sentence.
2. Don’t include a headline, sub-headline, or picture.
This is my first sentence.
Blah, blah, blah, one hundred and fifty times….
If you need more details this is from Medium themselves.
Okay, with that out of the way, let me tell you about this publication.
This is a place to publish anything (almost) that is 150 words or less in the format described above. Poems, rants, daily thoughts, ect.
I’ve decided to make everyone editors like they do on the Partnered…
A Nice $50 Bonus from Vocal
I wasn’t one of the talented Medium writers that got the recent $500 bonus, but I did get my 50th story published on Vocal yesterday and they gave a $50 bonus. Not $500, but hey, I’ll take it.
In my case, I’ve been crossing posting all my older Medium stories to Vocal. I was doing the same thing on News Break until they started enforcing the Local News Only rules over there.
If you have 50 stories or even poems on Medium and want an extra $50 Vocal might be worth the time and…
A magical little Highway that packs a real punch when it comes to great fishing.
I’ve written about a lot of the spots I fly fish in Eastern Washington from the north where Highway 17 meets Highway 2 at Banks Lake just outside of Coulee City and south as far as Crab Creek (lower) close to where it dumps into Moses Lake. I wanted to write a short re-cap article that includes all the spots along this 50 or so mile fly fishing paradise that I have fly fished at. A few of these I didn’t include in previous articles…
I wasn’t one of the 1000 writers that got the $500 from Medium this month, but I know several of the excellent writers out there that did. Good on you guys. That $500 bonus was well deserved.
No word yet from Medium whether this will become a regular thing or not, but I hope it does. Pure speculation, but I kind of wonder maybe Medium is feeling a little heat from competitors like News Break and Vocal Media.
Though their policy changes are annoying and often confusing, News Break has been paying me very well since January 2021 (about 10…
Some of the best fly fishing in Eastern Washington
This will probably sound strange, but I spent a lot of time fly fishing in the middle of the desert. When I say desert most people think of the famous ones like the Sahara desert in Africa or maybe the Mojave Desert in southern California. But Eastern Washington in the Columbia Basin is also a high desert. Fortunately, it is drained by the mighty Columbia River, so there is quite a bit of water there made up of tributaries, lakes, reservoirs, ponds, ect. Many of the these water ways hold not…
The first time I ever did Stand Up in the US
I’ve been doing stand up comedy for the past six years. I’m originally from the Seattle area, but I have been living in Japan since 2003. There is a comedy group in the city of Nagoya, Japan where I live that does shows once a month. This was pre-Covid 19 of course, but even still we were able to put on a few shows in 2020 and have done a few in 2021.
Our audiences are usually made up of English speaking foreigners that live in and around Nagoya…
