My Top Ten on Medium (so far)
These are the ten best poems, short stories, and personal essays I’ve written and published on Medium and elsewhere (so far). Eleven are from 2020 and the rest are old favorites. Enjoy.
The old man had been working in his small vegetable garden when the young foreign reporter approached from the dirt road that led out of the village and into the foothills.
The old man leaned on his shovel and listened to the reporter explain that he had been separated from a group of soldiers he was following into the hills near where the fighting was happening.
They were able to communicate using simple words in broken sentences in each other’s languages. The old man gestured towards his cottage and told the young reporter it would be safer to spend the…
Short form is anything on Medium that is 150 words or less.
1.Bold the first sentence.

This is my first sentence.
Blah, blah, blah, one hundred and fifty times….
If you need more details this is from Medium themselves.
Okay, with that out of the way, let me tell you about this publication.
This is a place to publish anything (almost) that is 150 words or less in the format described above. Poems, rants, daily thoughts, ect.

tips and tricks
The first fish I remember catching myself was a flounder off the pier in Hansville, Washington. I believe I was a little over three years old. I was using a yellow plastic square thing with what seemed like kite string for a line. It had a heavy lead sinker and a shiny hook on the end of it. My dad baited it with a herring and I dropped over the side of the pier. A few minutes later I was tugging up my first self caught fish.
It was many years later before I tried fly fishing…
A heads up for Short Story Writers
Vocal announced a brand new community (sort of, kind of like Medium pubs) for fiction writers. They also announced a new writing contest to go along with it. It is only open to Vocal + members (subscribers), but the grand prize is $20000! Second place is $5000 and third place is $2500. They are looking for a dystopian short story that is 600 to 2000 words long.
The contests on Vocal are pretty competitive from what I’ve seen, but if you are already a Vocal + member and you write short stories I…
A few tips and tricks I’ve learned
I remember the very first time I caught a Brown Trout on a fly. My late step father had taken me to fly fish a small stream in Eastern Washington. This was my first time fishing that stream and really only my second or third time fishing small streams at all. It was early in the morning when we hit the stream and I was a little frustrated because for the first hour or so I wasn’t having any luck at all. While my step father, who was using worms, had already caught…
Some tips and tricks I’ve learned
Maybe even more so than lakes and rivers, Washington State has a huge number of creeks, streams, and small rivers through out the state. Though not all of them are open for fly fishing, many of them during certain times of the year are and can often be great for small, medium, and even large sized trout.
As always, it is best to check the regulations for the latest updates before you head out to the water. …
At least for now I like News Break’s payment system a whole hell of a lot more than Medium’s. Even if I were one of the fortunate writers to get Medium’s bonuses for the last two months (I wasn’t), at $1500 a month News Break still kicks Medium’s butt when it comes to earning cash for my writing.
But even with News Break’s fantastic payment system there are still some key things I feel it lacks that Medium has.
When it comes to writing I’m very good at tone, structure, plot, creating characters, and hooks. I’m terrible at editing. …
